Liturgical Choir Accompanist
Applications are now being accepted for the position of piano accompanist for the Marquette University Liturgical Choir. A $4,000 stipend will be awarded to a Marquette undergraduate or graduate student exhibiting strong piano and improvisational skills, sight-reading ability and a proficient level of choral score reading ability. The position may be renewed on a yearly basis.
Qualifications Required:
- Current Marquette undergraduate or graduate student
- Extensive piano background required (seven to ten years of study)
- High level of piano and choral score sight reading ability
- Improvisational skills and working knowledge of fundamental music theory
- Experience playing for Catholic liturgies (preferred but not required)
- Commitment to attendance at weekly rehearsals and liturgies
Audition and Interview
Applicants will be contacted about scheduling an audition time upon receipt of the completed application. The audition will consist of the following:
- Prepare and play two contrasting pieces from classical piano repertoire
- Sight-read a choral score and hymns / songs of contrasting styles
- Improvise on a liturgical song given only the chords and melody line
Job Description
Serve as accompanist for the following:
- Weekly 6 p.m. Sunday Mass at the Church of the Gesu with pre-Mass warmup
- Wednesday evening choir rehearsal from 5-7 p.m.
- All-University Liturgies and rehearsals for these liturgies, including:
- Mass of the Holy Spirit (Wednesday, September 4th)
- Family Weekend (Last Sunday in September)
- Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday
- Baccalaureate Mass (Saturday in mid-May)
- Liturgical Choir Fall and Spring concerts
- Other special liturgies as needed
