Ryan holds a BS from UW-Green Bay, an MBA from Keller Graduate School of Management, a DBA (ABD) from Indiana Wesleyan University, and several certifications that include topics in venture capital, teaching entrepreneurship, commercial lending, facilitation, and sales. Prior to teaching at Marquette, Ryan was a community bank executive and business lender, lecturer of entrepreneurship at UW-Green Bay, lecturer at the Wisconsin School of Business (UW-Madison), adjunct or program/course leader at several other universities, and director of the Wisconsin Small Business Development Center at UW-Green Bay. He is the executive director of the Wisconsin Center for Employee Ownership, coaches and consults with family enterprise owners and serial founders, and owns a short-term rental co-hosting company. He's founded and co-founded several businesses and community efforts.    

Ryan is a business ownership advocate and volunteers for ColorBold Business Association, Progress Lakeshore, Medicine Fish Corp, BizStarts, WWBIC, SCORE, Business Lending Partners, the Wisconsin chapter of The ESOP Association, and for high school entrepreneurship classes and FBLA. He has also served on Main Street program boards, as chief mentor at the European Innovation Academy, as lead organizer for a 1 Million Cups community, the Governor's Business Plan Contest, Wisconsin YES!, e-Fest, The Pitch Fox Cities, on the Wisconsin Economic Development Association board, on the American Marketing Association Northeast Wisconsin chapter board, on young professionals network boards, on a Habitat for Humanity chapter board, and for several chambers of commerce/business associations.
