He holds a joint appointment as Assistant Professor of Information Systems and Analytics in the College of Business Administration. Dr. Xu serves as the founding director of the Ai4Ai Lounge (Artificial Intelligence for Analytics and Insights). As affiliated faculty at the Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute (NMDSI), he co-chairs the Talent Subcommittee, which oversees NMDSI's talent strategy.
Dr. Xu’s research focuses on the use and impact of emerging information technologies (e.g., artificial intelligence, social media, and online communities), which has received support from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the NMDSI. He has published in leading journals in information science and communication, including Telematics and Informatics and Human Communication Research. Besides, he has served as an invited reviewer for numerous journals such as Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking, Frontiers in Human Dynamics, Information, Communication & Society, International Journal of Information Technology & Decision Making, Journal of Media Psychology, Journal of Medical Internet Research, Journal of Social Service Research, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, New Media & Society, PLOS One, Recent Advances in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Small Group Research, Social Network Analysis and Mining, Social Science & Medicine, and Telematics and Informatics. He is a member of the Academy of Management (AOM), Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Association for Information Systems (AIS), and International Communication Association (ICA), where he regularly presents his research and serves as a reviewer.
At Marquette, he teaches courses on data analytics, quantitative research methods, statistics, emerging technologies, data visualization, and storytelling. In 2022, he received the Dean’s Recognition Award for Outstanding Advisor. Dr. Xu earned his Ph.D. degree from the University of Southern California.
