Assistant Professor of Practice, Management

Dianne D. Murphy, PhD, joins Marquette University in August, 2024 as an Assistant Professor of Practice in the Management Department at the College of Business Administration. Dr. Murphy blends her career of business experience with her second career of academic scholarship to bring forth a philosophy of teaching that includes experiential methods alongside innovative teaching design and real-world applications focused on student growth and learning.

Dr. Murphy’s academic journey began at Marquette University as a Young Scholar, attending Marquette while she was still in high school. It continued on with a BA in Psychology from St. Norbert College, emphasizing Personality Theory. She further honed her expertise with an MBA focused on Leadership from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), where she was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma for her academic excellence. Dr. Murphy earned her PhD in Management Science from UWM's Lubar School of Business, specializing in Organizational Behavior and Strategic Management under the guidance of Dr. Margaret A. Shaffer.

Courses Taught

Dr. Murphy has a robust teaching portfolio. Before her current role, she served as an Assistant Professor of Management at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay's Austin E. Cofrin School of Business from 2017 to 2024. She has developed and taught a wide range of courses for undergraduate, graduate and executive MBA students, some including Teams, The Learning Organization (with Design Thinking), Organizational Behavior, Entrepreneurship, Operations Management and Human Resource Management, integrating innovative teaching methods and real-world applications.

Her commitment to teaching excellence is reflected in numerous accolades, including most recently the Lawton Sustainability Award from the Cofrin School of Business at UWGB, four separate Gold Star Teaching Awards and the Outstanding Graduate Student Teaching Award from UW-Milwaukee, and multiple nominations by students for Faculty Member Making a Significant Contribution to Education and Student Nominated Teaching Awards while at UW-Green Bay.

Research Interests

Dr. Murphy's research interests span high-impact practices, entrepreneurship, family business, mentoring, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. She has presented her research at numerous international conferences, including the Academy of Management, The Diana International Conference, SIOP, MOBTS, and regionally at the Midwest Academy of Management.

Dr. Murphy’s research contributions are noted, earning recognition such as the Best Conference Paper Award in 2021 at the Midwest Academy of Management; Careers Best Paper Award Winner and the Arnon Reichers Best Student Paper Award Finalist in 2013 from the Academy of Management Conference. Dr. Murphy has also earned two Outstanding Reviewer Awards by the Academy of Management MED division and the Midwest Academy of Management in 2021.

Professional Experience

Dr. Murphy brings valuable industry experience to her academic role. She has held positions in prominent organizations like SUPERVALU, Roundy's Supermarkets Inc. and Hamacher Resource Group. At SUPERVALU, she began consulting in the field then moved internally into buying and evolved into a regional Category Manager in the Midwest and Northern regions. Dianne also was a member of the design team for restructuring the organization, and negotiated and maintained corporate contracts. Her career at Hamacher Resource Group as a Category Analyst involved consulting major corporations on merchandising, space planning, and category management. At Roundy’s, Dr. Murphy designed and implemented a category review process  program, which involved bringing data analytics into decision-making, resulting in increasing category gross margins; all while managing the retail merchandising analytics team and conducting training in space planning and category management. Her practical insights into business operations and management enrich her teaching and research, bridging the gap between academia and industry.

Professional Affiliations

Committed to continuous learning, Dr. Murphy continues to build her skills, and has recently pursued advanced training in multilevel modeling and analysis. She is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Academy of Management and the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM).

Dr. Murphy's multifaceted career exemplifies a blend of academic rigor, industry expertise, and a passion for teaching and community service. Her contributions to the field of management education continue to inspire students and colleagues alike.

Service and Community Engagement

Dr. Murphy's community service extends beyond academia. She serves as an Expert-in-Residence for the Green Bay Packers Mentor-Protégé Program, providing management and HR consulting to businesses, and has been involved in numerous community service activities, including food drives, educational outreach, and providing family pictures for the past 20+ years at St. Florian’s Parish with the Easter Bunny and Santa.
