First, our department would like to offer our sincere thanks to you for sharing your time and skills with our students. Our training program would not be possible without you! On this page we have compiled information that we hope you will find helpful as you supervise our master's level students.

What is Supervision?

Supervision is an intervention provided by a more senior member of a profession to a more junior member or members of that same profession. The supervision relationship is:

  • Evaluative
  • Extends over time
  • Enhances professional competency
  • Monitors quality of professional services offered
  • Serves as a gate-keeper for those who enter the profession

Research on supervision

  • Dr. Alan Burkard, Director of Training of Marquette's Counseling Psychology Doctoral Program, compiled a review of research findings on the effectiveness of supervision.
  • Smith (2009) has created A Brief Summary of Supervision Models which gives an outline of psychotherapy-based, developmental, and integrative models of supervision.

2024-25 Colloquium Series

Each academic year, the Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology Department provides a series of colloquia meant to educate students, faculty, and interested professionals in the community on certain aspects of clinical practice. We bring in practitioners and researchers who have expertise and experience in counseling. The presentations generally take place 2-3 times a semester on Tuesdays from 11:30am-12:30pm, via MS Teams. The Marquette University CECP Department is approved to offer continuing education credits to counselors to Wisconsin psychologists through the WI DRL.
