Support The Hartman Literacy and Learning Center

The Hartman Literacy and Learning Center is a teaching, research, and service operation that has benefited local schoolchildren, pre-service teachers, and the field of literacy since 1992. Teachers-in-training provide specialized tutoring to at-risk second and third grade readers identified by urban Milwaukee elementary schools. Faculty members with expertise in literacy guide the tutors, reviewing their lesson plans, supervising their instructional sessions, and providing strategic feedback. Long recognized nationally for its contributions to the field, the Center’s current research examines factors that contribute to growth in children's reading abilities and the effectiveness of teacher training in literacy instruction by following our graduates into their classrooms.
