Professional Achievement Award
Mark W. Boutelle, Bus Ad ’87, Grad ’91
Lake Villa, Ill.
As a group president running a group of six divisions at global manufacturer Illinois Tool Works, Mark is at an elite level of corporate leadership — an accomplishment he attributes in large part to his formation at Marquette and “the support and encouragement of those around me.”
In addition to the business skills and insights he gleaned from classes in the College of Business Administration — he is known at ITW for his strategic approach to marketing and translating value to a product’s end users — Mark says his experience at Marquette reinforced his commitment to the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of life. He adds that it also “instilled an informed foundation of respect for all people and an ethical approach” well before the broader business world began to prioritize diversity and ethics.
As generous as Mark is about sharing credit for his success, the proud Marquette alumnus is equally generous about promoting his alma mater within ITW. He has made key connections that advance the university and specifically the Opus College of Engineering and College of Business Administration. From coordinating ITW’s sponsorship of Homecoming 5K runs for the past two years, to facilitating ITW facility tours around the globe for international business students, Mark has helped establish a valuable corporate partner for Marquette.
With ITW as a founding partner, Mark has been heavily involved in the creation, launch and marketing of a Professional Sales program within the College of Business Administration. He continues to serve on the program’s advisory board and has been a guest lecturer in marketing classes.
Mark defines success as “the ability to do what I love to do every day,” and measures it by “the impact I have had on my children, family and others.”
Fun fact: Mark would like to have dinner with former President George W. Bush and get his take on excellence, faith, leadership and service.
