Exchange Categories for Visiting Scholars

All J-1 Scholars must be appropriately hired by Marquette University before a DS-2019 will be issued.

Research Scholar

An individual who is conducting research, observing, or consulting in connection with a research project at Marquette University. May teach or lecture as allowed by the university. The research scholar’s appointment must be temporary, even if the position itself is permanent. Graduate students may be eligible for this category if they will not be enrolled in Marquette courses.

Duration: Minimum 3 weeks and maximum 5 years.

Repeat Participation Limits:

  • Must not have been in any J-1 status for for more than 6 months in the last 12 months. 
  • May not have been a J-1 Professor or Research Scholar in the last 24 months

Professor

An individual whose primary purpose is teaching, lecturing, observing, or consulting at Marquette University on non-tenure track appointments. May conduct research as authorized by the university. The scholar’s appointment must be temporary, even if the position itself is permanent.

Duration: Minimum 3 weeks and maximum 5 years.

Repeat Participation Limits:

  • Must not have been in any J-1 status for for more than 6 months in the last 12 months. 
  • May not have been a J-1 Professor or Research Scholar in the last 24 months

Short-Term Scholar

An individual who is a professor, researcher, graduate student or person with similar education or accomplishments coming to the United States for a short-term visit for the purpose of lecturing, observing, consulting, research, training, or demonstrating special skills at Marquette University.

Duration: Maximum 6 months. No extension allowed beyond 6 months.

Repeat Participation Limits:

  • Requires a new program objective
  • Only possible after visitor returns home for the period of time necessary to share their experiences.

Exchange Categories for Students

All J-1 Students (degree-seeking and non-degree students) must submit the appropriate application and be fully admitted by the appropriate Marquette admitting office before a DS-2019 can be issued.

All J-1 Student Interns must be appropriately hired by Marquette University before a DS-2019 will be issued.

Student

A student pursuing a full course of study at Marquette during a regularly scheduled academic term. At Marquette, most J-1 students are non-degree and part of an official exchange program with an international partner university. Prospective non-degree exchange students should contact their home institution for application information and procedures. Students seeking admission to a degree program should apply using the appropriate graduate or undergraduate admissions process.

Student Intern

A student pursuing a degree at an institution outside the United States who will participate in an internship at Marquette that will fulfill an educational objective at the home institution. The Student Intern can be undergraduate or graduate.
