Group Study Rooms

Raynor Library has group study rooms available for use throughout the library. Some of the rooms can be reserved, while some are available on a first come, first served basis.

With only 15 rooms available, these student group study rooms are a shared resource. We ask that you be considerate of others and help us to ensure equitable access to these spaces for all members of the university community.

The rooms are intended for group study and collaboration on class projects, not individual study. While you may use a room if it is not reserved, please be gracious and surrender the space if requested by a group. The rooms may not be used for recurring class meetings, seminars, club meetings, or other extra-curricular activities.

Who is eligible to reserve group study rooms?

Only currently enrolled Marquette undergraduate and graduate students with the exception of law students (law students, see the last question in this FAQ).

How do I make a reservation?

Visit our group study room reservation page to find and reserve group study rooms. If you reserve a room, stop at the Library Services Desk before you use it to check out the room and get a pass. Also, some rooms have a minimum group-size requirement:

For projector or display rooms: 3 people
For large study rooms: 5 people

If you reserve a room with a minimum group size, group members will need to be present at the Library Services Desk to obtain the room pass. We ask this to ensure that these high-demand study spaces are used most effectively.

Non-reservable Study Rooms

The following student group study rooms are generally available on a first-come, first-served basis:

Graduate Student Study Room (R134)

This room is designed for graduate students to use. This is not a reservable space, but is restricted to only graduate students. To enter, tap your MU ID card on the reader near the door. If your ID doesn't work, please see the Library Services Desk.

This room has a dry erase board and a display with HDMI cable.

Open Study Areas

These rooms may be used as an open study area when not in use for a class or event. They are intended for multi-person use, so please do not close the doors to these rooms in order to allow others to use the space. Please see signage by each room for current availability.

R060D: This room may be used as an open study room only when it is not reserved for an event.

R227 (small classroom): This classroom may be used as an open study area only when it is not being used for a class or event. This room may also be blocked off during certain times throughout the semester.

Note: Please do not use the Surface Hub in this room. Another Surface Hub is available for student use on the lower level of Raynor.

R245 (large classroom): This classroom may be used as an open study area only when it is not being used for a class or event. This room may also be blocked off during certain times throughout the semester.

FAQ:

How do I know what rooms have been reserved?

Check group study room reservations.

How long can I reserve a room for?

Two hours at a time.

When can I make a reservation?

Up to two weeks ahead of time. Reservations are made in half hour increments. Same day reservations must be made at least one full hour ahead of time.

May I have more than one room reservation at a time?

Yes, you can have up to 3 pending reservations per person.

How long will you hold a reservation if I don’t arrive on time?

Reservations are held until 10 minutes after the reserved time. If the room pass is not checked out within 10 minutes of the reserved time, others will be allowed to utilize the room for the remainder of the reservation period.

Can I use a student group study room if I am not with a group?

The rooms are designated for group collaboration, NOT individual study. You may use a room alone if it is not reserved, but please be gracious when asked to surrender the space if requested by a group.

Can I use a student group study room for tutoring or other formal/informal instruction sessions?

Student group study rooms are intended for use by students for group work. Due to the high demand, we cannot accommodate use of these rooms for instructional purposes such as recurring class meetings, tutoring sessions, exam reviews etc.

I am a faculty member. May I make a recurring reservation for a student group study room for class purposes?

Sorry, they are not intended for recurring class meetings. We have very few student group study rooms and there is high demand for them. They are intended for collaborative student use only. Occasional use by a faculty member for a special class session can be accommodated. Please contact the Library Services Desk with questions.
