Exercise: Identifying Transferable Skills
When considering your career or preparing for your job search, think about what you enjoy doing and what you do best. You developed many skills from coursework, extracurriculars, internships, jobs and your total life experiences. You've researched, written, edited and presented papers at Marquette. So you have hard and soft skills that apply to many occupations: transferable skills.
Hard and Soft Skills
Hard skills are abilities you learn. These skills are quantifiable, such as language proficiency, typing speed, computer programming, project management and college degrees, licenses or certifications. Soft skills are more subjective traits like leadership, communication, creativity, time management, teamwork and problem solving.
