Lunchtime Talk by Kirk Nickel, PhD, Marc and Lillian Rojtman Curator of European Art

Please join us for this engaging 20-minute Lunchtime Talk featuring the work of Jesús Rafael Soto. Born and trained in Venezuela, Soto was a seminal figure in Kinetic and Op Art, both in the Americas and in Europe. This month’s Art Talk will focus on his 1969 multiple Jai-Alai, currently on view in the Haggerty’s anniversary exhibition The Big 4-0: New Views of the Collection. Originally intended for display in a domestic setting, Jai-Alai is a nine-part installation that invites viewers to consider the relationship between object, eye, and mind in the experience of an artwork. After the discussion, you can stay to continue the conversation or explore the Haggerty's current exhibitions.

Marquette University Choral Concert Concealed Language: A Plea for Help

In collaboration with Family Weekend 2024, the Haggerty Museum of Art will present Concealed Language: A Plea for Help, a concert by the Marquette University Chorus. The concert was inspired by the Haggerty’s exhibition SOS Color Code, an indoor and outdoor installation comprised of flags and changing colored lights based on the dots and dashes of Morse code. The installation transforms the international SOS signal of distress into a sign of solidarity and connectedness and asks its viewer to reconsider how language, symbols, and color can help us find stability and safety in an uncertain world. Following similar themes, Concealed Language: A Plea for Help explores the emotive power of choral music and the hidden language within the featured compositions.

The Haggerty Museum of Art, in partnership with Sculpture Milwaukee, will present a conversation with Luftwerk, the Chicago-based artist team of Petra Bachmaier and Sean Gallero, and collaborator Normal Studio (Renata Graw) on Wednesday, October 9 at 5:00 p.m. at the Haggerty Museum of Art. The artists created SOS Color Code, an outdoor installation currently on view at the Haggerty. Using the universal languages of Morse code and color theory, a series of printed flags transform the international signal of distress (SOS) into a sign of solidarity and connectedness. A companion indoor installation, Color Code, by Bachmaier and Gallero, presents a painted mural with changing color light projections, also in the form of Morse code dots and dashes.

Both installations coincide with the 2024 presidential election and the International Day of Democracy. The International Day of Democracy, celebrated annually on September 15th, was established in 2007 by the UN General Assembly to encourage governments to review, consolidate, and strengthen democracy. The General Election will be held in Wisconsin on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

The lecture is scheduled during National Voter Education Week and is a reminder to plan to register and vote. Learn more about registration deadlines and voting methods for all 50 states at vote.org.

Please join us for this engaging 20-minute Lunchtime Talk featuring the work of LaToya Ruby Frazier. Frazier’s art foregrounds the stories of people who are routinely left out of our standard narratives of the American experience. This month’s Art Talk will focus on four photographs from her series The Notion of Family that are currently on view in the Haggerty’s anniversary exhibition The Big 4-0: New Views of the Collection. Taking herself, her family, and her hometown of Braddock, Pennsylvania, as her subjects, Frazier’s images find universal resonance in the meaningful details of everyday circumstances.
