Campos-Pons asks her audience challenging questions through her art. We invite you to reflect upon, and to answer, these questions:
- Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons’ work asks the viewer to investigate elements of her identity. In what ways do you share your identity with others?
- Campos-Pons’ work asks the viewer to ponder the connection between bodies of water and our ancestral memory. What memories do our local waterways hold? In what histories do we swim? How do you feel connected to the sky, the land, the air, and the water near you?
- Campos-Pons’ artistic practice asks her to explore her intersectional heritage. How do you carry the stories of your ancestors?
Brenda Cárdenas, Associate Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and co-creator of the Letras Latinas inaugural Pintura : Palabra (Painting : Word) writing workshop, discusses the tradition of ekphrasis--creative writing inspired by the visual arts--and gives you pointers on various ways you might approach writing a poem or story inspired by Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons work in Sea and Self.
