Kristen Maskala can recount many fond memories from her college days at Marquette University, but playing on the women’s basketball team is surely one of the highlights. She will never forget making it into the NCAA tournament for the first time in Marquette women’s basketball history.

Today, she can even appreciate the injuries she suffered while playing because they provided her with a foundation for her interest in sports medicine. After graduation, Maskala entered medical school and is now a respected orthopedic surgeon in West Bend, Wisconsin, where she specializes in what else—sports medicine.
“Marquette has continued to impact my personal and professional life,” she says. “I learned to always take pride in what you do and the importance of living your life as a genuinely caring and compassionate person. I have a busy schedule as a doctor, but it is absolutely the most rewarding job a person can have. It is especially rewarding to help athletes get back into playing sports again and watch their progress as they recover from their injuries.”
While at Marquette, Maskala had the chance to participate in a number of service opportunities, including basketball camps for Special Olympics and the Girl Scouts. Although her time is more limited today as a surgeon, she still finds time to live out the Marquette mission of cura personalis—caring for the whole person. She volunteers as the team doctor for Hartford High School and organizes a free girl’s basketball camp each fall in Washington County with fellow former teammates from Marquette.
Maskala also helps in another way. As an athlete who attended Marquette on a scholarship, she feels it is important to give back to her alma mater. “I know how much it means to have a degree from Marquette,” she says. “I hope that through my donations I can help another student or student-athlete defray some of the cost of his or her education without having to worry about the financial issues.”
Maskala’s passion for Marquette even carries over into her free time. One of her favorite things to do is watch Marquette basketball, of course!
