Distinguished Alumna of the Year Award
ELIZABETH DIERCKS HALL, NURS '51
Flossmoor, Ill.
During Elizabeth’s first pregnancy, she endured a near-fatal case of polio, which left her in a coma for days. When she awoke, she was completely paralyzed and unable to speak, swallow or breathe. Her experience overcoming her disability inspired her to dedicate her life to making a difference for others.
Alumna in Service to Nursing Award
DR. MADELINE MUSANTE WAKE, NURS '68, GRAD '71
Milwaukee
Madeline’s distinguished 34-year career at Marquette included serving as professor, dean of the College of Nursing and university provost. These days, she’s as busy as ever. Madeline plays a key volunteer role in a project in Ethiopia designed to reduce harmful practices against women and is board chair for Youthaiti, which improves sanitation in rural Haiti.
Young Alumnus of the Year Award
TONY GUZZARDO, NURS '09
Wauwatosa, Wis.
Tony grew up in a small town, always appreciating that lifestyle, but was encouraged to explore. Marquette helped him do that and more. He says: “Plain and simple, Marquette opened the door to a world I never imagined.” Now, he feels privileged to care for others every day.

NORMAN H. VOLK, GRAD '59
New York
Norman doesn’t plan to retire until he’s 85. He continues to enjoy his strong relationship with Marquette decades after receiving his master of arts degree and is working on pressing geriatric issues facing the country as chairman of the John A. Hartford Foundation’s Board of Trustees.
