Started in the mid-1990s, the Common Data Set is a collaborative effort among university data providers and publishers to report accurate university information on a wide variety of topics.

Universities annually complete the same CDS survey using standardized definitions of terms as defined by the U.S. Department of Education. Each CDS reports on general university statistics relating to student enrollment and persistence, financial aid, annual student expenses, student life, academic offerings and policies, as well as instructional faculty counts and class sizes.
