May 13, 2024
MILWAUKEE — Marquette University Law School and its Lubar Center for Public Policy Research and Civic Education will present “Battleground Wisconsin: Politics, Polls, and Perspectives” — a special presentation with the Marquette Law School Poll team that will dive into the Wisconsin electoral scene — on the day before the start of the Republican National Convention: Sunday, July 14, at 10 a.m., in Eckstein Hall, 1215 W. Michigan Ave.
This event is open to media only and is particularly designed to give reporters visiting Milwaukee for the RNC a deep dive into Wisconsin, with perspectives on current affairs, the effects of changes in voter demographics, and highlights of poll data on some of the state's most significant issues.
Registration for the event is open and available online.
Charles Franklin, director of the Marquette School Law Poll, as well as Lubar Center fellows Craig Gilbert and John Johnson will sit down with Derek Mosley, director of the Lubar Center, to set the stage for the convention to come. The RNC takes place at Fiserv Forum, less than a mile from Eckstein Hall, home of Marquette Law School.
Doors open at 10 a.m. for a complimentary breakfast buffet and networking. The program will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m. and conclude at noon. Program participants will be available for media interviews after the program.
The Marquette Law School Poll, which Franklin has directed the since its inception in 2012, is the most extensive statewide polling project in Wisconsin history. He previously co-founded pollster.com, an award-winning site for nonpartisan polling analysis. Franklin is a past president of the Society for Political Methodology and an elected fellow of the society; he holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Michigan.
Gilbert serves as a Lubar Fellow after a 30-year journalism career, which last saw him serve as D.C. bureau chief for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. His election analysis through the Lubar Center continues to appear in that newspaper. Johnson is a Lubar Center Research Fellow who is an expert on Wisconsin electoral demographics. His analysis of legislative-district maps submitted during the recent high-profile Wisconsin Supreme Court proceeding on redistricting drew national coverage.
Mosley returned to Marquette Law School as the Lubar Center for Public Policy Research and Civic Education director in 2023. After graduating in 1995, he served as an assistant district attorney for Milwaukee County; from 2002 until 2022, Mosley served as a judge of the Milwaukee Municipal Court. At the time of his appointment, he was the youngest African American to become a judge in the state of Wisconsin.
Through public programming such as the Marquette Law School Poll, “On the Issues” conversations with newsmakers, public lectures by leading scholars, conferences on issues of public significance, and the work of its Lubar Center, Marquette Law School seeks to advance civil discourse about law and public policy matters.
