MILWAUKEE — Sister Helen Prejean, award-winning author and advocate for the abolition of the death penalty in the United States, will be the featured guest for an “On the Issues” conversation to be held Friday, April 19, at 12:15 p.m. at Marquette Law School’s Eckstein Hall.

Sister Prejean will discuss her ministry, working against the death penalty, counseling individual death row prisoners, and working with murder victims’ family members. It has been 31 years since her book, now known as “Dead Man Walking: The Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States That Sparked a National Debate,” was published. Sister Prejean's book was made into an Oscar-winning movie and, most recently, an opera. She continues to educate the public, advocate for ending the death penalty, and counsel both prisoners’ and victims’ families.

Derek Mosley, director of the Law School’s Lubar Center for Public Policy Research and Civic Education, will lead the conversation. This program is in partnership with Marquette Law School's Andrew Center for Restorative Justice. Copies of Sister Prejean's books will be available for purchase at the event from Boswell Books.

Through public programming such as the Marquette Law School Poll, “On the Issues” conversations with newsmakers, public lectures by leading scholars, conferences on issues of public significance, and the work of its Lubar Center for Public Policy Research and Civic Education, Marquette Law School seeks to advance civil discourse about law and public policy matters.
