Marquette Business’ Marburg Lecture on economics to be delivered Nov. 9
Nov. 2, 2022
MILWAUKEE — Dr. Rohini Pande, Harry Heinz II Professor of Economics and director of the Economics Growth Center at Yale University, will deliver Marquette University’s annual Marburg Memorial Lecture, “When the Tide Turns: Poverty, Inequality, and Power,” on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 3:30 p.m. in the Alumni Memorial Union, Monaghan Ballrooms, 1442 W. Wisconsin Ave.
The lecture is hosted by the Department of Economics in the College of Business Administration and open to members of the general public at no cost; registration is required and available online.
Pande’s research is largely focused on how formal and informal institutions shape power relationships and patterns of economic and political advantage in society, particularly in developing countries. She is interested the role of public policy in providing the poor and disadvantaged political and economic power, and how notions of economic justice and human rights can help justify and enable such change.
Her most recent work focuses on testing innovative ways to make the state more accountable to its citizens, such as strengthening women’s economic and political opportunities, ensuring that environmental regulations reduce harmful emissions, and providing citizens effective means to voice their demand for state services.
In 2018, Pande received the Carolyn Bell Shaw Award from the American Economic Association for promoting the success of women in the economics profession. She is the co-chair of the Political Economy and Government Group at Jameel Poverty Action Lab, a board member of the Bureau of Research on Economic Development, and a former co-editor of The Review of Economics and Statistics.
The Marburg Lecture series is named in honor of the late Theodore F. Marburg, a longtime member of Marquette’s Department of Economics. The goal of the lecture is to provide a forum for the discussion of moral, philosophical, and social dimensions of economic issues, as well as continue Professor Marburg's commitment to the economic aspects of peace and justice. The Marburg Lecture is made possible by the generosity of the Marburg family and through the support of the Center for Global and Economic Studies.
