Advisory: St. Joan of Arc Chapel reopening highlights Christmas season events at Marquette University
Nov. 29, 2021
MILWAUKEE — Marquette University will officially mark the reopening of St. Joan of Arc Chapel with the return of Tuesday night Mass on Tuesday, Nov. 30. A second Mass and the university Christmas tree lighting will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 1.
St. Joan of Arc Chapel had been closed for restoration work to the structure and surrounding gratitude garden. Renovations included immediate needs such as roofing, security and temperature control highly important to the integrity of this medieval masterpiece, but also long-term assessment of critical renovations.
The chapel’s grand opening festivities highlight the start of the holiday season on campus:
- Tuesday Night Mass (Tuesday, Nov. 30, 10 p.m.): St. Joan of Arc Chapel will welcome students back for the first Tuesday night Mass in the newly renovated chapel. Limited seating for students is available inside the chapel, with additional seating and viewing screens available in the gratitude garden for students. Hot chocolate will be served, and the first 250 students will receive a special edition mug.
- Faculty/Staff Mass (Wednesday, Dec. 1, Noon): A Mass for faculty and staff is scheduled for St. Joan of Arc Chapel. In addition to limited seating inside the chapel, viewing screens will be in place for seating in the gratitude garden. Hot chocolate and French-themed desserts will be served following Mass.
- Marquette Christmas Tree Lighting (Wednesday, Dec. 1, 5 p.m.): Marquette will host its university Christmas tree lighting at St. Joan of Arc Chapel. Members of the University Chorus will lead the crowd in Christmas carols, followed by a blessing of the tree and the official lighting.
- Music Area Holiday Concert (Sunday, Dec. 5, 2 p.m.): Marquette University Chorus, Orchestra, jazz ensembles, symphonic band and wind ensemble will perform a program of light holiday music. The event is also a food drive, as attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to local shelters.
All events are open to the public. Any media interested in attending should contact Kevin Conway, associate director of university communication, at kevin.m.conway@marquette.edu or (414) 202-9329.
