Marquette chemistry professor receives Faculty Award for Research Excellence
June 18, 2021
MILWAUKEE — Dr. William Donaldson, professor of chemistry in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, is the 2021 recipient of the Lawrence G. Haggerty Faculty Award for Research Excellence.
Marquette’s highest honor for research and scholarship, the Lawrence G. Haggerty Faculty Award for Research Excellence recognizes scholarly distinction at Marquette University.
“Receiving this award is truly honor and a testament to the hard work of the many undergraduate and graduate students who were part of our research efforts, without whom our successes would not have been possible,” Donaldson said. “I look forward to seeing how our research impacts the world.”
Donaldson is internationally known for his contributions to organoiron chemistry – the chemistry of iron compounds containing a carbon-to-iron chemical bond, which has an important role in organic synthesis.
So far, Donaldson has written or contributed to more than 120 journal articles and awarded more than a dozen grants and contracts, including grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.
Donaldson’s current work focuses on molecular synthesis and how certain compounds can be used to remedy different women’s health issues including hot flashes and memory decline following the onset of menopause.
One nominator wrote that Donaldson goes above and beyond in every aspect of his career. They describe him as “always ready” and “always up for a challenge” — whether it be contributing to organometallic chemistry research or teaching as many as 230 undergraduates per year.
The nominator also wrote that Donaldson volunteers “for many tedious and difficult departmental tasks and even decided to spend four years as an associate dean in order to gain more insight into arts and sciences operations.”
Donaldson’s selfless and giving nature has also benefitted many, as he gives his time to assist others. He has directed the research of 15 master of science and 18 doctorate degree recipients and has mentored over 50 research associates and students on various research projects.
Outside of the classroom, Donaldson continues to impress. He has presented his research at nearly 90 institutions around the world.
It is because of professors like Donaldson, the nominator wrote, that Marquette remains a hub for research and success, and there is truly no one more deserving of this prestigious honor.
