Hottest issues in K-12 education to be topic of Marquette Law, College of Education online program April 27

Pedro NogueraMILWAUKEE — Marquette University Law School and the College of Education will co-host a virtual program, “The Hottest Issues in K-12 Education: Tough Questions, Thoughtful Answers,” with noted K-12 commentators Pedro Noguera and Frederick Hess, on Tuesday, April 27.

Noguera and Hess will talk about their new book, “A Search for Common Ground: Conversations About the Toughest Questions in K–12 Education,” with Alan J. Borsuk, Marquette Law School’s senior fellow in law and public policy.

Frederick HessNoguera is dean of the Rossier School of Education at the University of Southern California and is generally considered on the liberal side of issues. Hess is director of education policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute and is generally regarded as on the conservative side of issues. The guests have different views on many issues but agree that now is a good time for level-headed and serious discussion.

Through public programming such as the Marquette Law School Poll, debates featuring candidates in significant political races, Mike Gousha’s “On the Issues” conversations with newsmakers, public lectures by leading scholars, conferences on significant issues of public importance, and the work of its Lubar Center for Public Policy Research and Civic Education, Marquette Law School serves as the region’s leading venue for civil discourse about law and public policy matters.

This event also supports the College of Education’s focus on lifelong learning and an appreciation for research and professional growth. Marquette students continually reflect on their practice and role in society, as well as attempt to enhance the learning and general well-being of those they serve. In all of these endeavors, they grow in their engagement with critical analysis and advocacy around structural inequities in society and in education.
