MILWAUKEE — Marquette University received two honors last weekend at the annual Jesuit Association of Student Personnel Administrators conference at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.
Marquette received the 2019 JASPA Ignatian Medal for Outstanding Commitment to Diversity and Social Justice for its RISE program. RISE, which stands for Ready to Inspire Success and Excellence, is an orientation to campus life for multicultural and underrepresented students prior to the start of the fall semester. The orientation includes an introduction to campus resources, services, and offices; workshops to develop skills and strategies for success in the first year; an opportunity to connect with fellow students, faculty, and staff of color in team and community building events; and an exploration of Milwaukee.
“Recognition for our RISE program reflects the hard work our staff has done to help multicultural and underrepresented students feel a true connection to campus life at Marquette,” said Dr. Xavier Cole, vice president for student affairs.
Whitney Woodson, residence hall director for Mashuda Hall, received the 2019 JASPA Ignatian Medal for Outstanding New Professional in Jesuit Student Affairs. Her many duties include supervising, training and evaluating a student staff; enforcing university policies, adjudicating Student Conduct Hearings and providing educational outcomes for students; advising student leadership organizations and programs; and maintaining the physical environment of the residence hall. In addition to her responsibilities as a residence hall director, Woodson also serves as a co-chairs for the Division of Student Affairs Diversity Committee.
“Whitney’s contributions to the university go beyond her duties as a residence hall director,” Cole said. “She offers unwavering support for students, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, and she has been a fierce advocate for creating a campus environment that is accepting of and inclusive for all students.”
