MILWAUKEE — Dr. William Chester Jordan, Dayton-Stockton Professor of History at Princeton University, will lecture at 7 p.m. on Sept. 13 at Marquette University's Alumni Memorial Union, 1442 W. Wisconsin Ave., room 227.

Jordan will discuss "The First Crusade and Jewish Martyrdom" while participating in the National Visiting Scholar Program sponsored by the Marquette Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.

Jordan served as chairman of the Department of History at Princeton, where he teaches courses on the Middle Ages. His most recent books include A Tale of Two Monasteries: Westminster and Saint-Denis in the Thirteenth Century, Men at the Center: Redemptive Governance under Louis IX, and From England to France: Felony and Exile in the High Middle Ages.

"This lecture by one of the most distinguished scholars in the field exemplifies the quality we strive for in all educational pursuits at Marquette," said Dr. James South, director of Marquette's Center for the Advancement of the Humanities, which is sponsoring the event.

Founded in 1776 in order to champion education, foster freedom of thought and recognize academic excellence, Phi Beta Kappa is the most prestigious academic honor society in the United States. Only 10 percent of colleges and universities have chapters.

"The Marquette Phi Beta Kappa chapter is indicative of Marquette's national reputation," South said.
