MILWAUKEE — Dr. Lucas Torres, associate professor of psychology at Marquette University, was recently honored with the Faculty Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion Award.

Torres has studied mental health disparities among members of the Latino community through funding from the National Institute of Mental Health. He has collaborated with colleagues at other institutions to study post-traumatic stress disorder among African-Americans who face discrimination and community violence. He and Dr. Lisa Edwards, associate professor of counselor education and counseling psychology, co-founded the Latina/o Well-Being Research Initiative.

"Dr. Torres represents our best efforts to understand and minimize race/ethnicity disparities in mental health and to increase cultural competency and diversity on our campus," wrote Dr. Ed de St. Aubin, associate professor and assistant chair of psychology, in a letter of recommendation. "He embodies the Ignatian value of care for others and has consistently contributed to Marquette's mission for diversity."

Torres seeks to help others through his research on the mental health of underrepresented groups, mentorship of students from diverse backgrounds and service to Marquette on issues of diversity.

"Underlying my approach to promoting diversity and inclusion is the notion that service for others, particularly the marginalized, is key to success and growth," he says.

The Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion Awards recognizes one faculty member and one staff member who demonstrate exemplary leadership and manifest the ideals of diversity, equity and inclusion into practical action.
