State representative Kooyenga, teachers' union president Schroeder to discuss the future of education in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE — Wisconsin State Rep. Dale Kooyenga and Milwaukee Teachers' Education Association President Kim Schroeder will be the featured guests in an event, "The Future of Education in Milwaukee: One Conversation, Two Points of View," Tuesday, May 17, 12:15 p.m. at Marquette University Law School's Eckstein Hall, 1215 W. Michigan St.

The two guests will discuss what they see as the best ways to improve educational outcomes for Milwaukee children. It will be moderated by Alan Borsuk, senior fellow in law and public policy at Marquette Law School.

Kooyenga, a Republican from Brookfield, is an advocate for charter schools and private school voucher programs and for the Milwaukee Opportunity Schools Partnership Program, which gives the Milwaukee County Executive power to manage selected public schools. Schroeder is a teacher who has been active in the Milwaukee teachers' union for years. He became president of the union in 2015. He is an advocate for strengthening public schools and he opposes voucher and independent charter schools.

Through public programming such as the Marquette Law School Poll, debates featuring candidates in significant political races, Mike Gousha's "On the Issues" conversations with newsmakers, public lectures by leading scholars and conferences on significant issues of public importance, the Law School serves as the region's leading venue for serious civil discourse about law and public policy matters.
