Associate Professor of Spanish

Languages, Literatures and Cultures

Sonia Barnes completed her Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics in 2013 at The Ohio State University, specializing in sociolinguistics, phonetics/phonology and language contact. She joined Marquette University's Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures in 2013, where she teaches a variety of courses in Spanish Language and Linguistics.

Research Interests

Her current research explores the linguistic and social factors that govern language variation and how speakers use this variation to construct their identities. She is interested in phonetic and morphophonological variation that occurs in situations of language contact, particularly that of Asturian and Spanish in Asturias (Spain), and Spanish and English in the U.S. In her research she examines the social meaning attached to different language variants and the role of linguistic variation in the construction of place-based identity.
