The Individualized concentration allows students to work with their adviser and the program director to design their own curriculum. The depth and breadth of the interdisciplinary major in international affairs allows students greater range than any other major on campus. At a time when climate change, cyber security breaches and a pandemic are possible, the traditional international affairs curriculum can inadvertently limit the scope of study as the world changes faster than textbooks can be revised.

Students may work with their advisers to design a concentration on a topic in which they have a special interest. All such concentrations must meet the following conditions:

  • An individualized concentration must include four related 3-credit upper division courses on a topic in international affairs significantly different than any of the existing concentrations.
  • An individualized concentration must be declared and approved in writing at least a year prior to the student’s graduation.
  • The proposal must be signed and approved by the student, the student’s adviser and the Director of INIA.
