Recreation Facility Policies
Eligibility
The following list of individuals are eligible for a recreation membership

- MU Alumni
- Campus Affiliate
- Community**
**Community members do not receive access to the Wellness + Helfaer Recreation Center
Access
Identification
- All patrons must access the facility through a designated check-in area and present their ID card (MUID, CheckMarq, Driver's License, or another form of Government Issued ID).
Spectators
- Spectators allowed entry for Athletic, Club Sports and Intramural events if accompanied by a student member but must register at the Front Desk prior to access.
Minors
- All minors - defined as being 17-years old or younger (unless enrolled at the University), must be always accompanied by their parent/guardian/custodian/host unless participating in a structured departmental youth program, or contracted reservation.
Attire
Our department values an environment of inclusion as well as the health, safety and well-being of all of those that utilize our spaces. The following attire is always required within the facility.
Fitness Center:
- Clean, appropriate clothing must be always worn that covers the nipples, groin and buttocks through all ranges of motion (exceptions are the locker room areas and the pool).
- Clothing that can potentially damage equipment is prohibited.
- Closed-toe, non-marking, activity-appropriate footwear is required: street shoes, backless shoes, clogs, and boots are not allowed.
- Cleats and spikes of any kind are not permitted in indoors facilities.
Swimming Pools:
- Clean clothing, that is safe for water sports, must be worn to use the pool.
- All children under 2 years of age, or who are older but not toilet trained, must wear an approved swim diaper.
Facility Policies
Equipment Checkout
- You must present an approved identification card to check out equipment.
- Equipment must be returned the same day it is checked out and should be returned at least 10 minutes before closing.
- Some items may be rented for an extended period. Please refer to the Service Area staff on duty for information about extended rentals.
- You are responsible for the replacement fee due to loss or theft if a piece of rental equipment is left unattended or unsecured. This included equipment that is returned damaged beyond normal wear and tear.
Lost and Found
The Department of Campus Recreation is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Personal belongings are encouraged to be kept in a locker or designated areas.
Lost and Found items will be returned and kept in the equipment checkout area for a designated allotment of time.
- Personal items found in all facilities will be placed in the lost and found at that facility.
- The lost and found is cleaned out and discarded every Friday morning.
- Contents from day use lockers that were not cleared out by closing each night or an expired long-term locker will go through the lost and found process.
- Items deemed as “valuable” will be turned over to the campus police.
- Staff will not provide lost and found confirmation over the phone. The member or guest must be present at the facility to confirm the item.
- Items being claimed by a patron will need to be described thoroughly and accurately.
Food & Drinks
- Food, chewing gum, and drinks are all only permitted in the lobby area before swiping into the facility.
- Water is the only drink permitted in the activity spaces, and must be in an enclosed, shatterproof container.
Photo/Video
Photographs and videos may be taken of informal recreation and programs by Recreation or University Marketing staff at any times. These photos/videos are used for promotional and marketing purposes. Those who wish not to be filmed or photographed may notify the photographer.
- Photo and Video is STRICTLY PROHIBITED in all restrooms, locker rooms and pools always.
- Members are allowed to use their phones to take photos/videos of themselves working out or participating in an activity but must be used for personal use and cannot cause interruptions or discomfort for others.
- If someone expresses them not wanting them to film around their personal space, individuals should honor that request.
- Photos and videos for the use of external use such as class projects, or news spots, should be approved by designated Campus Recreation staff.
Guest Policy
Only Student memberships are allowed guests into the Wellness + Helfaer Recreation Center.
- Students may bring up to 1 guests per day.
- Each guest is also limited to a max of 10 lifetime guest pass uses, regardless of who the host student is. This amount does NOT reset.
- Guests can use the Rec Plex at any time using a guest pass or purchasing a community membership/pass once the pass limit has been reached.
The Guest
- Must present a valid government-issued identification card.
- Must sign/agree to the facility access waiver.
- The sponsor must remain with the guest while using the facility.
- The guest must be known to the host.
- A guest may not ask individuals whom they do not know to sponsor them.
Individuals that violate this policy are subject to suspension and/or removal from the facility.
Prohibited Items
The following items are not allowed in any Campus Recreation Indoor Facility:
- Bicycles and shopping carts.
- Skateboards/scooters unless it is a medical device.
- Guns/ammunition or items which can be easily mistaken for weapons, such as black water pistols, plastic nun-chucks, or an empty pepper spray container.
- Bringing pets into the Center (exception: Service Animals).
Conduct
General Conduct
- All patrons must abide by the Student Conduct Code and all other policies and procedures related to conduct and decorum are always enforced.
- Use of the Wellness + Helfaer Recreation Center is considered a privilege. Mature and respectful conduct is expected and always required.
Prohibited Activities and Behaviors
- Committing or attempting to commit any activity that would constitute a violation of any federal, state, or local criminal statute or ordinance.
- Exhibiting disruptive or disorderly conduct or behavior that unreasonably disturbs patrons and staff and interferes with use and enjoyment of the facilities, including but not limited to:
- Smoking or other use of tobacco anywhere inside any facility.
- Any form of vaping or other drug use.
- Fighting or threatening actions.
- Posing an unreasonable risk to health or safety, including but not limited to offensive personal hygiene that unduly disturbs others.
- Consuming any alcoholic beverage except at approved events. Alcoholic beverages, tobacco products and non-prescription drugs are not allowed in the facility.
- Displaying overt signs of alcohol or substance abuse that are accompanied by disruptive behavior.
- Use of loud, obscene, or abusive language to patrons or staff.
- Displaying overt sexual behavior or engaging in sexual harassment or other types of harassment (e.g., racism, hate speech, threatening speech or behavior, disrespectful behavior).
- Misuse or vandalism of facility property or equipment.
- Unauthorized entry into buildings, offices, and work areas.
- Bringing in any items that create a hazard to others or placing personal belongings in a manner that impedes access to services.
- Personal private contract work, i.e., swimming lessons, personal training, and/or fitness workouts of any kind, are not permitted at the Center. Anyone interested in receiving private instruction can inquire with our various program staff.
Spectator Conduct

The role of spectators is to provide support and encouragement, which will be beneficial to the participants, the game, and the program. Spectators must remain in designated areas and not encroach on the playing area. Spectators violating these guidelines or exhibiting unsportsmanlike conduct will be asked to leave and may be assessed additional sanctions.

Intramural team captains, Club officers, and/or responsible parties can be penalized for the actions of their spectators.
The Department of Campus Recreation reserves the right to deny or restrict facility use to anyone who refuses to comply with the policies set forth in this handbook.
Service Animals
Service animals are defined as an animal that is individually trained, or is being trained to work or perform tasks to benefit a person with a disability. These animals include guide dogs and hearing dogs.
The following expectations are to be upheld by any service animal on campus or removal of the animal may be warranted:
- The animal must always be in control of the handler (though not necessarily by use of a leash). This means that the animal will respond to commands from the handler, will act respectfully and professionally towards humans and other animals.
- The service animal must be housebroken and well groomed.
- The animal can go anywhere that humans are allowed except for situations that may compromise safety or program objectives.
If it is unclear whether the animal is a Service Animal (there is no harness, they are distracted from their owner, or it is acting disruptively) you are allowed to ask the following two questions:
- Is the animal required because of a disability?
- What work or task has the animal been trained to perform?
Pool Policies
- Admission into the pool may be denied for any of the following reasons:
- Intoxication or clear impairment.
- Evidence of contagious disease.
- Open sores and/or wounds
- Inappropriate swim attire. (See: Attire)
- Any condition or evidence which the staff determines will jeopardize the health and safety of users and/or staff.
- No consuming of food or drink (other than water).
- No outside instruction is permitted in the facility. Members can find information about swim lesson programming by visiting the Rec portal.
- The following are not allowed in the pool area unless approved by the aquatics staff for a specified reservation:
- Water guns/toys.
- Use of kickboards and pull buoys in an unintended way.
- Hyperventilation, underwater breath holding games and swimming underwater for more than half the length of the pool.
- All flotation devices may be used only if they are U.S. Coast Guard approved.
- No personal music should be played out loud.
- No unnatural jumping or diving is allowed.
- Handstands and sailor dives are dangerous and prohibited.
Pool Etiquette
- Practice common courtesy to other swimmers using the pool.
- All lane swim patterns should be counterclockwise.
- Swim to the outside of the lane to allow for passing in the middle.
- To pass, tap the foot of the person in front of you.
- If a swimmer is directly behind you when nearing the wall, pause and allow them to pass.
Lockers and Towels
Locker Rooms
Marquette University strives for an atmosphere of inclusion and belonging. The Wellness + Helfaer Recreation Center offers 4 options for use of locker rooms spaces.
We invite all individuals to use the locker room and restroom that is most comfortable and appropriate for them. Marquette University does not tolerate acts of harassment or discrimination against anyone on the basis of gender identity. Such instances will be immediately addressed by our staff.
- All lockers are the property of Marquette University. A fee will be assessed for locker damage caused by negligence or abuse.
- Campus Recreation reserves the right to check lockers for unreturned towels, equipment, and to resolve safety/security concerns.
- Secure personal items in the locker room. Campus Recreation is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
Daily Use Lockers
Day use lockers are available at no charge on a first-come/first-served basis.
- Members must remove all items in day-use lockers when they leave the facility. All left contents of a locker will be sent through the Lost and Found process.
Long Term Lockers
- A bank of lockers in the Men’s, Women’s, Universal, and Family Locker rooms are designated for Long Term use.
- Long term lockers can be purchased for a monthly fee.
