INSIDE THIS ISSUE: From the Dean’s Desk,
Building for the Future - An Update,
By the time you receive this message our Class of 2012 will have graduated and will be out on their own, beginning their careers in the profession of dentistry. They are all choosing different paths as they leave the Marquette School of Dentistry but they’ll always share their experiences here. It was a quick four years, we’ve prepared them well and we wish them all good luck and great success and fulfillment in their careers. This issue of our email newsletter highlights some wonderful achievements for the school and our people. It also will bring you up-to-date on special events coming up soon, so mark them on your calendar. I hope you enjoy it. If you’ve got something you would like to see in a future issue, please let us know. And thanks for "being the difference" for us at the Marquette School of Dentistry. Sincerely, Building for the future - an update Thanks to the generosity of hundreds of alumni and friends, we are pleased to report that we now have commitments totaling nearly $5.2 million toward our matching funds goal of $8 million – shooting past the halfway point. Dr. Rick Kushner, Dent '77; his wife, Cindy Kushner; and Comfort Dental recently pledged a very generous $1 million toward the project and are challenging our alumni to match their efforts and help us raise another $1 million by June 30. And don’t forget, every dollar we raise will be matched by the state of Wisconsin, in effect doubling the impact of your gift. In addition to the Kushner’s challenge, the Wisconsin Dental Association has challenged their members and component organizations to raise $500,000 for the project. When successful, the WDA will earn the naming rights to the new high-tech CE classroom space that will be found in the expansion. We are truly grateful to the WDA for their continued friendship and support. The question is, have you made your gift/pledge yet? Can we count on your support as we "Build for the Future" of Marquette's dental school? Pledges can be spread out over as many as five years. Donor recognition will be made available for those who give a minimum of $5,000. Naming opportunities are also available. Thank you to those who’ve given so far and to those who are considering a gift in the immediate future. If you are interested in making a pledge or learning more about the expansion, visit the Building for the Future website or contact Dave O’Neill at 414.288.6048 or david.oneill@marquette.edu. The School of Dentistry and its alumni association board are proud to present their fourth annual continuing education program and Milwaukee Brewers tailgate and game. On Friday, July 13, they will offer the class "Millennial Oral Medicine and Pathology," presented by Denis Lynch, D.D.S, Ph.D. The class will be worth three continuing education credits and run from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Room 194 at the dental school. Following the class, participants will head to Miller Park for a tailgate from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., followed by a Brewers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates game starting at 7:10 p.m. Whether you choose just the class, just the tailgate and game or the whole package, come out and join your fellow alumni and friends at this increasingly popular annual event organized by your Marquette School of Dentistry Alumni Association. For more information on pricing and discounts, please contact the Marquette School of Dentistry at 414.288.3093. The U.S. Navy Dental Corps will celebrate its 100th anniversary year this year. Marquette will commemorate this milestone with a ceremony on Aug. 3. All Marquette dental school alumni who served in the United States Navy are welcome to attend. There also will be an official celebration in Washington, D.C., Aug. 22-25. A new analysis of the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey by Dr. Christopher Okunseri, associate professor of public health, was recently featured in a New York Times article on emergency room doctors and painkillers. Thriller at Miller VI in Milwaukee The sixth annual Thriller at Miller will be held Saturday, July 14, at Helfaer Field at Miller Park in Milwaukee. The day kicks off at noon and concludes with the Thriller at Miller VI Showdown at 3:15 p.m., where students of the Marquette School of Dentistry take on students from the Medical College of Wisconsin. Winner takes the coveted Caduceus Cup! There will be games and tailgating all afternoon as well as tickets to watch the Brewers take on the Pirates at 6:05 p.m. Bring your family, mentees, colleagues and classmates. Please see our website for details. Tax savings and retirement plans Do you have money saved in an employee retirement plan, IRA or tax-sheltered annuity? Each of these retirement plan assets contains income that has yet to be taxed. Your beneficiaries will owe the income tax at your death totaling up to 35 percent, which may be reason enough to consider giving your loved ones less heavily taxed assets and leaving your retirement plan assets to charity.
