Amy LiepertDr. Amy E. Liepert, H Sci '02
Madison, Wis.

Amy credits her unique perspective on health policy and advocacy to the educational variety she received at Marquette.

“I have a growing interest in health care advocacy, and that interest stemmed from a public health course I took at Marquette,” she says. “I was also fueled by some of the business classes I took as part of my minor in business administration.”

Amy says that variety helps her to look at the medical field with the perspective to challenge many of the “typical courses of action” related to health policy, especially when it comes to advocating for her patients.

“Advocacy allows my impact on patients to extend beyond my physical interventions in the operating room, hospital and clinic,” she says.

Amy’s involvement on the legislative level further extends her ability to advocate and affect policy changes. She is chair of the Policy, Planning and Government Relations Committee of the Wisconsin Surgical Society and a member of the Health Policy Advocacy Group of the American College of Surgeons, among many other appointments.

“I plan to continue to build my academic surgical career as an acute care surgeon, as well as continuing my work in health care advocacy,” she says. “I want to ensure adequate care for patients by ensuring that the systems for their care continues to remain a legislative priority.”
