Vacant House Watch service offered for Spring Break

Students are encouraged to take advantage of Public Safety’s Vacant House Watch program during Spring Break. Students residing in the near off-campus neighborhood can register their homes to be monitored while they are away. Vacant House Watch registration forms are available online or at the Public Safety office in the 16th Street Parking Structure. For more information call (414) 288-6800.

The Career Services Center can help your son or daughter fill in the blank or find a great summer internship with the following services:

• Walk-in and satellite hours are available for resume critique or to learn more about Career Services Center resources.  Walk-in hours are held every weekday from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., and general satellite hours are held outside the AMU Brew Bayou on Wednesday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
  

• A Career Manager account allows students to submit their resume for on-campus interviews and job postings targeting Marquette students.  This resource can be accessed through the Career Services Center Web site.
  

• Students can set up an appointment with a career counselor by calling (414) 288-7423.  They can learn about a variety of job search resources and get feedback on their efforts.

More than 100 employers attended the annual Workforce Career Fair this year, and new jobs are posted every day.  It is important to encourage your son or daughter to be persistent and proactive in their job search in light of the weak economy!

Facebook safety information

New reports are surfacing involving hacking on Facebook personal profile pages. In response to the trend, the Better Business Bureau issued a warning on its Web site in late January, intended for Facebook's 150 million users: know who your friends are and keep your sensitive information private. Facebook says it is taking measures to reduce impersonations. The popular site also offers these tips for those who want to take the security of their online profile into their own hands:

• Be suspicious of anyone - even friends - who ask for money over the Internet. Verify their circumstances independently, either by calling them directly, or checking with mutual friends.

• Choose a strong password and use unique credentials for each of your Web accounts. Facebook says hackers tap into one site and then try to reuse passwords on others.

• Use an up-to-date browser that features an anti-phishing blacklist.

• Use and run anti-virus software on your computer.

• Reset your Facebook password if you suspect your account has been compromised.

• Have more than one contact e-mail address. This will help if one of them is hacked.

Visit the Haggerty Museum of Art

A new exhibition will open at Marquette’s Haggerty Museum of Art Thursday, March 12, at 5 p.m. with a discussion with the artists. Current Tendencies: Ten Artists from Wisconsin features recent work and new installations by contemporary artists from Wisconsin. As these artists work in a variety of media and on disparate themes, each artist will have a unique space within the museum for his or her work. The art in the exhibition will range from paintings, drawings and photographs to mixed media.
  
The Haggerty will also offer The State of Art, an open forum about the visual arts in Wisconsin Thursday, March 26, at 7 p.m.  For more information, call (414) 288-1669 or visit the Haggerty Museum of Art Web site.

Record-breaking season for the Marquette basketball teams

With his 21st point against Villanova Feb. 10, senior guard Jerel McNeal passed George Thompson to become the all-time leading scorer in Marquette men’s basketball history. One week earlier, senior Krystal Ellis posted her 1,819th career point to become the top scorer in the history of Marquette women’s basketball.
 
With March Madness right around the corner, both the men’s and women’s teams are gearing up for the BIG EAST and NCAA Tournaments. Ranked No. 8 in the country, the men’s team hosts No. 2 Connecticut tonight at the Bradley Center in a game that can be seen at 6 p.m. on ESPN. The Golden Eagles will then hit the road to face No. 6 Louisville and No. 1 Pittsburgh before wrapping up the regular season at home against Syracuse March 7. Meanwhile, the women’s team will travel to Providence and DePaul this week before their regular season finale at home vs. Louisville March 3.

Dr. Rosemary Stuart, professor of biological sciences

Dr. Rosemary Stuart, professor of biological sciences, received the university’s highest teaching honor, the 2008 Robert and Mary Gettel Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence.

With an expertise in cell biology and mitochondrial function and regulation, Stuart believes that the true integration of research and education is an essential part of a student’s scientific training. She says her teaching mission is believing in her students so they can learn and use their talents for a greater goal.

“I have been blessed during my career to have had many outstanding teachers and mentors who inspired, guided and at times even pushed me,” said Stuart. “It's only natural to want to pass that on to the next generation.”

Stuart received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at University College Dublin in Ireland, and her Ph.D. from Ludwig-Maximillians Universität in Munich, Germany.
