Public Safety update
The Department of Public Safety reminds all students and parents of the safety resources available on campus.
• LIMO vans operate from 5 p.m. until 3 a.m., nightly, providing door-to-door service in all areas of campus and a large section of the near-campus area.
• LIMO Express service operates from 6 p.m. until 3 a.m. during the school year. These white mini-buses travel designated, fixed routes on highly traveled streets, and give students another option for getting from one end of campus to another. Route information is available online.
• DPS also offers an after-hours shuttle. Call 414-288-6800 for a ride home.
• Walking escorts are also available from 5 p.m. to midnight. Outfitted in reflective jackets and operating in two-person teams, safety patrollers provide walking escorts around the campus area.
• More than 200 Blue Light Phones provide direct contact with Public Safety’s communication center. In addition to emergencies, the phones can be used to request a LIMO van or Safety Patrol escort, to report suspicious activity or to obtain directions.
• Public Safety employs the most advanced technological features, including an extensive digital video system, allowing for “virtual patrolling” of campus and neighborhood areas.
Public Safety is offering free self-defense classes for all university community members. The one-session classes will be held in the Alumni Memorial Union beginning at 5 p.m. on Sept. 9, Sept. 30, Oct. 26 and Nov. 18. There is no fee for the class but registration to Public Safety at 414-288-6800 is required.
Information on Public Safety programs and services can also be found on the department Web site. Parents are welcome to contact Public Safety at any time.
Preparing for the flu
The university anticipates that cases of seasonal and H1N1 flu will occur among students and employees this year. The symptoms of both seasonal and H1N1 flu are similar and include a combination of fever with either cough or sore throat, often accompanied by body aches and fatigue.
In addition to prevention practices such as proper hand washing, a critical component to controlling the spread of flu-like illness is for sick individuals to avoid contact with others. In keeping with Centers for Disease Control guidelines, the university encourages students to make appropriate decisions and stay home from class, work and campus activities if they are ill with a flu-like illness until 24 hours after their fever is gone.
Marquette also urges parents to have plan in the event of illness. For most students, the best place to recuperate will be at home with parents and family. We understand that it may not be possible for all students to go home and will have plans for students who will be unable to leave campus.
The seasonal flu vaccine will be available at sites throughout campus beginning Oct. 1. All students are urged to get a seasonal flu shot; find details about dates, times and locations online.
Marquette University, working closely with public health officials, is monitoring the H1N1 flu situation and taking appropriate precautions. As the H1N1 flu continues to develop, the university will post updates or communicate with campus as needed.
More information, including prevention tips and a letter from the medical director
to students and parents, is available on the Student Health Service Web site.
Remind students: Enroll in emergency text messaging system
In the case of an emergency on campus, information—including safety instructions for students, faculty, and staff—will be made available to the campus community through e-mail, text messaging and the Marquette Web site. However, students must enroll in the emergency text messaging system by following these instructions for entering their cell phone number in the “Personal Information” section of Checkmarq. The text messaging system is also used to notify students of university closure due to weather conditions such as snow.
New residence hall opens; Varsity Theatre renovations complete
More than 200 sophomores are now the first occupants of Marquette’s newest residence hall. McCabe Hall is a 1920s building on 17th and Wisconsin Avenue that underwent extensive refurbishing after being purchased by the university. Its eight floors feature 91 double and triple rooms with private bathrooms and many original architectural details. The ground level includes a lobby with two large-screen televisions, chapel, rec room, hall store, computer lab, kitchenette and conference room.
Musical acts, visiting speakers and other guests have a newly renovated home on the Marquette campus after completion this summer of the final phase of a three-year project to update the Varsity Theatre. The renovation included installation of new theatre seating, carpet and tile, painting of the lobby and theatre, and the installation of a new "sound" cloud on the stage. Many elements of the theatre’s original Art Deco style were enhanced during the project.
Celebrating the Centennial of Women at Marquette
In 1909, Marquette became the first Catholic university in the world to offer coeducation as part of its regular undergraduate program. To help honor the centennial, a year-long series of historical notes highlighting turning-point moments and figures in Marquette’s collaborative past will be featured each week on the Centennial Celebration of Women Web site. The Web site also includes an interactive photo wall, information about news and events to celebrate the centennial, and details about women at Marquette today and an oral history project.
New video: Hear about Marquette’s Catholic, Jesuit identity
Marquette’s Difference Network offers free access to video coverage of key thought leaders speaking at Marquette University events. In the latest installment, hear from Stephanie Russell, executive director of university mission and identity at Marquette. She is also the founding member of Ignatian Associates, a community of more than 100 men and women who live and serve in the Ignatian tradition. During this video compilation, she discusses leadership, faith and the Catholic, Jesuit identity through the history of St. Ignatius and how new technologies affect Jesuit education. In addition to Russell’s work at Marquette, she regularly directs retreats and writes and speaks on Ignatian topics.
