Helpful tips for bicycle riders

As the spring weather prompts students to get outdoors, bicycle traffic on and around campus will increase. To keep bicycles secure, please remind your students of the following tips:

• Always secure your bicycle with effective locking devices. High-security locks are available for $20 from the Parking Services office.

• The City of Milwaukee requires that all bicycles are licensed. Free licensing decals can be obtained from the Parking Services office. Non-licensed bicycles are subject to a $63 fine.

• Secure bicycles to fixed objects, such as permanent bicycle racks that are cemented or anchored into the ground. Avoid securing bicycles to trees or other objects that can be removed or broken. On campus, bicycle parking is allowed in designated areas only.

• Secure bicycles in well-traveled, well-lit areas.

• Consider engraving a personal identification number or message on your bicycle. Electric engravers can be borrowed from Public Safety.

Those in need of long-term bicycle storage are encouraged to utilize the secured Bike Corral, located in the basement of the 16th Street Parking Structure. Bicycles must be registered with Parking Services prior to gaining access into the Bike Corral. Once inside the corral, all bicycles must be secured using a high-security lock.

For more information, contact Public Safety at (414) 288-6800.

International flag sashes available for May graduates

Is your child a May graduate who has gone overseas on an international program through Marquette or holds citizenship from another country? If so, he or she can take advantage of a new opportunity to stand out from the crowd and represent their international experience by purchasing an international flag sash to wear at the May commencement ceremony. Every country is available. The sashes are high-quality and make an excellent memento. Photos and more information are available online.

To purchase a flag sash to wear at graduation, students need to complete an order form with the Office of International Education (AMU, 425) by Thursday, April 16.  Order forms need to be accompanied by a check for $30 made out to the Office of International Education. Sashes will then be available for pick-up along with regular graduation gowns on Tuesday, May 12, and Wednesday, May 13.

Be sure your student knows about this new opportunity for May graduates!

20th anniversary of Marquette’s Hunger Clean-Up

Hunger Clean-Up began in 1989 as a modest student effort to combat hunger and homelessness in Milwaukee. Twenty years later, it has become Marquette’s largest one-day service project with more than 1,800 volunteers working at 180 sites simultaneously throughout the community. Hunger Clean-Up has forged relationships with more than 150 agencies in and around Milwaukee. Last year, this entirely student-run activity generated more than $20,000 for local charities. Students learn about these prevalent issues through education and advocacy, and local agencies are supplied with necessary resources to combat hunger and homelessness through fundraising and corporate partnerships.

This year, student, staff, faculty and alumni participants will meet in Westowne Square on Saturday, April 18, at 8 a.m. for opening ceremonies and will leave for various work sites at 9 a.m.

Parents are welcome to support Hunger Clean-Up by donating to support the event. Consider making a gift of $20 to celebrate 20 years of this important service activity. Any donation amount is welcome and can be mailed to:

Marquette University Office of Student Development Alumni Memorial Union, 329
PO Box 1881
Milwaukee, WI 53201

Parents can also participate by volunteering with the Alumni Association team. Registration is required and can be completed online.

IMPORTANT: Please select the “Marquette University Alumni Association” team name on this form.

More information about Hunger Clean-Up is available online or by calling the Office of Student Development at (414) 288-1412.

Parents hosting receptions for admitted freshmen

This spring, current Marquette parents are hosting 24 receptions in 15 states for admitted freshman students and their parents. This important effort developed from a conversation with Office of Undergraduate Admission’s Parent Advisory Board. We greatly appreciate all the parents opening their homes to the families who may become part of the Marquette tradition next year. If you would like more information about volunteering for this effort next spring, please contact Molly Dinolfo at (414) 288-4497.

FACULTY PROFILE OF THE MONTH

Dr. Nancy E. Snow

Dr. Nancy E. Snow, associate professor of philosophy, recently received the university’s highest teaching honor, the Rev. John P. Raynor, S.J., Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence.

Snow teaches theory of ethics, philosophy of law, medical ethics and the history and philosophy of crime and punishment at Marquette. She works with students to become aware of the problems in the world, to approach social problems as systemic issues, to look for creative solutions and to feel that they can make a difference in the world.

“I am honored to receive this award for doing something I truly love — teaching,” said Snow, and added that she hopes her work in the classroom helps teach students to think on their own instead of simply accepting, without question, what others tell them.

Besides fulfilling her teaching and research responsibilities at Marquette, Snow helped develop a team-taught course entitled, “Moral and Political Education” and served as the Director of the Core Curriculum from 2002 until 2005.

On the men’s side, in a triumphant first year as head coach Buzz Williams took the Golden Eagles to a 25-10 overall record, including a 5th place finish in the ultra-competitive BIG EAST Conference and a NCAA Tournament victory over Utah State.

Coach Terri Mitchell’s women’s squad finished 17-16 and knocked off top opponents including Gonzaga, Kansas and Notre Dame. The Golden Eagles qualified for the Women’s NIT and advanced to the third round after defeating Butler.
