Standout athlete and EXPH graduate returns to coach at MU

Jack Hackett (MU EXPH '13) returned to Marquette in summer 2024 to lead the distance program of the cross country and track & field teams.  The student newspaper recently featured him in a story.

Dr. Chris Sundberg receives MU's Way Klingler Early Career Award

Dr. Sundberg was one of thirteen faculty members honored on April 9, 2024 at the Distinguished Scholars Program, which recognizes faculty for outstanding achievement in research and scholarship.  His specific award supports promising new scholars in critical stages of their careers.

Recent EXPH graduate receives highest honor given to a Marquette student-athlete

Current men's lacrosse player and EXPH graduate Mason Woodward is one of two recipients of the 77th Robert L. and William P. McCahill Award, the highest honor conferred to a Marquette student-athlete. He was honored at Fiserv Forum during the men's basketball game on 1/15/24.  Mason was subsequentially picked in the 1st round of the Premier Lacrosse League College Draft on 5/7/24.

Senior EXPH student discusses her experience being involved in research

With funding from Marquette's Athletic and Human Performance Research Center, Grace Tostrud took the initiative to get involved in undergraduate research with the LAST Lab. Now in the early part of her DPT education, Grace reflects on her research experience and the confidence it gives her.

Dr. Sandra Hunter is lead author on ACSM position paper on sex-differences in sport

From the American College of Sports Medicine press release: "The primary goal of this consensus statement, which focuses primarily on adult male and female athletes, is to contribute to the public dialogue by providing the latest scientific knowledge and subject matter expertise on the sex differences in athletic performance, while assisting with evidence-based solutions and ensure an equitable and fair solution for all."

Grad Michael Falk featured in College of Health Science's magazine

Michael Falk is a graduate of Marquette University's College of Health Sciences (2012) and Physical Therapy (2017) and owner of Kinetic Sports Medicine and Performance. He was featured on page 36-37 in an article discussing his role with professional sports.

Professor Keith Owsley featured in local media

Local media interviewed Wisconsin Athletic Trainers Association's president elect, educator of the year, and Marquette University's Program in Exercise Science Clinical Assistant Professor Keith Owsley for a story about a student who collapsed at a high shool basketball game. The article discussed the critical role of athletic trainers in high school sports. Professor Owsley teaches ATTR 7110 in the Masters in Athletic Training program that teaches future athletic trainers the skill set of acute emergency care including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the developing of an emergency action plan within athletics.

Marquette University's Program in Exercise Science hosts international conference

The annual International Society of Biomechanics in Sports conference came to Milwaukee in July 2023.  The conference brought together experts in engineering, health, and computer science focusing heavily on biomechanics research and technology.

Dr. Rachel Bollaert receives MU's 2023 Participating Faculty Reseach Award

Marquette's annual Distinguished Scholars Reception honors the recipients of prestigious research awards on campus, and this included the recognition of Dr. Bollaert and her research efforts.

Dr. Kristof Kipp works with athletes to improve performance

Program in Exercise Science Associate Professor Dr. Kristoff Kipp was featured in the news for working on a project with members of MU's sports performance staff and men's basketball team.  He was also highlighted by Marquette and in a local media piece regarding his involvement in bringing to Marquette and studying aspiring Olympic athletes of the USA Weightlifting team.

Dr. Sandra Hunter named editor-in-chief of premier sports medicine journal

Effective January 1st, 2023, Professor in the Program in Exercise Science and Director of the Athletic and Human Performance Research Center (AHPRC) will start her duties as editor-in-chief of Exercise and Sports Science Review (ESSR).

Dr. Chris Sundberg and Dr. Sandra Hunter receive $3.02 million grant

Two exercise science professors received a grant from the National Institute of Health's National Institution on Aging in order to further research in people with pre-diabetes.

Vets, PTSD, and Yoga

Dr. Rachel Bollaert, assistant clinical professor in the Program in Exercise Science, talked with Lake Effect of Milwaukee's NPR (WUWM - 89.7 FM) station. She examined the feasibility of a Marquette University based yoga program for veterans with PTSD. This work investigated some of the common associated symptoms as well as potential psychobiological mechanisms.

Program Accreditation

After a rigorous review, The Program in Exercise Science is now accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation for the Exercise Sciences (CoAES). As of July 2022, the Program in Exercise Science is now one of less than 100 exercise science programs with this accreditation. More details on the importance and implications of this accreditation program can be found here.

Exercise Science graduate receives Pedro Arrupe Award

Exercise science graduate and physical therapy student Rachel Beilfuss received the Pedro Arrupe Award for her service through StreetLife Communities, the Midnight Run and the MARDI GRAS program.

Marquette exercise physiology students earn Bronze Certification in first-year Exercise is Medicine project on campus

Students in the exercise physiology major, along with mentors Toni Uhrich, Mike Danduran, and Carolyn Smith, initiated a campus project designed to meet the American College of Sports Medicine Exercise is Medicine guidelines for healthy college campuses. The initiative EIM on Campus calls upon universities to promote physical activity as a vital sign of health. Clinical Associate Professor Michael Danduran receives John P. Raynor, S.J., Teaching Excellence Award

Having once gone viral for doing a backflip in class that was caught on video by a student, Professor Danduran said he never envisioned pursuing teaching but always knew he felt energized when he was questioning and searching for answers.
