Tell us about yourself and your study abroad experience.

I am a non-traditional student majoring in Psychology, while also managing my responsibilities as a wife, a mom to three young boys, and a career. During my final semester at Marquette, I had the most unforgettable opportunity to study abroad in Rome, Italy. The faculty-led program focused on intercultural communication and organizational interactions and analyzed case studies on intercultural competencies. Walking through the cobblestone streets of Pompeii, seeing historical landmarks like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and the Vatican, and enjoying authentic Italian cuisines were just a few memorable moments. I also had the incredible opportunity to connect and collaborate with varying university professors, engage with students from a local fashion university, as well as creating friendships with fellow Marquette students, which made my studying abroad experience even more rewarding. This extraordinary learning experience is a reminder that with determination and hard work, you can accomplish anything, no matter where you are in life.

How has the Gilman Scholarship assisted you in your study abroad goals?

The Gilman Scholarship was a tremendous help for me. As a mom juggling my career and family, the financial side of studying abroad was a big concern. The scholarship lessened that burden because it allowed me to focus on the experience rather than stressing about the costs. With the scholarship, I was able to fully embrace my experience in Italy and I had the opportunity to explore, not just Rome, but other parts of the country without worrying about money. Being a recipient of the Gilman Scholarship added to my educational experience in ways I couldn't have imagined.

What would be your advice to other students thinking of studying abroad or apply to the Gilman?

My advice to other students thinking about studying abroad and/or applying for the Gilman Scholarship is to go for it! There's so much to gain from the experience. I learned about the study abroad program and the Gilman Scholarship from a colleague who was a Marquette EOP graduate and a Gilman Scholar. She pushed me and encouraged me to be open-minded and be willing to step out of my comfort zone. When applying for the Gilman Scholarship, do not be afraid to share your story and emphasize what makes you stand out. Being authentic and passionate about your goals and aspirations can really make a difference.

What recommendations/resources would you encourage students to look into to prepare for the Gilman application process?

When preparing for the Gilman application process, I highly recommend starting early. I spent months working on my essay because I wanted it to reflect my true, authentic self and to show how much the Gilman scholarship would mean to me. My goal was for the committee to understand who I am and why I am deserving of such a prestigious award. I would also encourage the students to use the resources available at Marquette. Talk to the study abroad advisors, attend workshops, connect with past Gilman scholars, and peruse through the Gilman web site to review examples of great essays. By taking time to research and prepare, it will make your application even stronger.
