Gender Affirming Voice Therapy
Gender-affirming voice therapy targets pitch, resonance, intonation and social communication skills to help patients achieve perceived feminine/masculine and gender-non-conforming voices.
Therapy sessions help individuals safely modify their voices and communication behaviors with evidence-based interventions and patient-focused care. Individuals seeking medical management for gender-affirming services should seek care with their primary care provider.
Providing care within our professional code of ethics
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) recognizes gender-affirming voice and communication services for transgender and gender-diverse populations within the speech-language pathology scope of practice.
Ensuring treatment for all individuals in need of speech, language, hearing, and related services is consistent with ASHA’s Code of Ethics (Principle I, Rule C).
Mission with mercy
At Marquette University, we uphold the inherent dignity of all persons, and one way of living our Catholic, Jesuit mission is by being present to those on the margins of society and accompanying them on life's journeys.
The Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) president authored a paper on the compassionate accompaniment of individuals on Catholic, Jesuit campuses with diverse gender identities, emphasizing a response of comfort and healing without judgment – especially important for a marginalized population facing higher rates of depression, anxiety and suicide. Accompanying them in a humane manner helps them discern and embrace their voices, which can ease discomfort and reduce harassment.
