Greentree: The Ties that Bind
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel photojournalist Angela Peterson captured moments in time at Greentree-Teutonia Apartments, a low-income housing complex that sits on 14 acres on Milwaukee's north side. The community houses more than 700 residents.
Marquette students Isabel Bonebrake and Megan Woolard collaborated with Peterson on the series. Their investigation found that Greentree defies the stereotype of a housing project. It offers hope, education, community and dignity in the midst of the challenges that socially disadvantaged communities face.
The first installment of the series, which consisted of 22 stories, was published in August 2024. The photographs, videos, journal entries and stories featured in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel captures the heartache and triumph of a community that is often overlooked and misunderstood. The series also focuses on the journey of Greentree community members like Vicki Davidson, who has devoted her life to the success of the Greentree youth, and Raphiell Ford, who found and developed his voice as an artist at Greentree.
