Born out of his personal experiences of intergenerational trauma, Independent journalist Lee Hawkins, produced the podcast, What Happened in Alabama? The podcast series that aims to understand the impact of Jim Crow segregation on the intergenerational trauma in Hawkin's family.
Marquette students Andrew Amouzou, Ziyang Fu and John Leuzzi collaborated with Hawkins on the podcast, which is produced in partnership with APM Studios, the podcast division of American Public Media (APM).
Throughout the series, Hawkins shares intimate stories of his family coupled with conversations with experts on the Black American experience to unpack his family history and his father's painful past. The series dives into discussions to understand those who may have similar generational - and present day - experiences. The podcast breaks the cycles of trauma for Hawkins, for his family, and for Black America.
The podcast can be listened to on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and all podcast platforms.
