Biographical Note: Robert D. Murphy was born in 1895 and attended Marquette University in the 1910s. He served as one of President Franklin Roosevelt's top aides during World War II and later as ambassador to Belguium (1949-1952) and Japan (1952-1953). Murphy worked for the State Department until 1960, at which time he became chair of the board of the Corning Glass Company, a post he held until his retirement. He died in 1978.
