Biographical Note: Hugh H. Gaffney was born on April 27, 1894 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Hugh and Helen Gaffney. He worked at the Northwestern National Insurance Co. and attended Marquette University until 1917, when he enlisted in the United States military. After the war, he settled in Texas, married Ann Knapp, and worked for the Republic Insurance Company. He died October 25, 1966.

Scope and Content: Collection contains Hugh H. Gaffney's correspondence (photocopies) with Ann Knapp, whom he married in 1919; his siblings Irene, Lenore, and Harriet Gaffney; his mother, Helen Gaffney (formerly Lingenfelser); and Mary ("Mame") Gaffney, a paternal aunt. Gaffney wrote the letters during his service in the American Expeditionary Forces, 1917-1919. The letters describe his voyage to France and the battles in which he participated. Collection also includes correspondence from an uncle, James Francis Gaffney; newsclippings (photocopies); and photographs of Gaffney at Fort Sheridan, Illinois.
