Marquette Olympians

August 2012—Raynor Memorial Libraries join the world in celebrating the 2012 Olympics in London. To add to the celebration, the Libraries have created a special Pinterest board with select images of summer Olympians with Marquette ties.

The university was first represented in the Summer Olympics at the 1908 London Games when John J. Brennan participated in the broad jump, high jump, and triple-jump. Ralph Metcalfe was the first with Marquette ties to win a medal, taking a silver and bronze in track and field at the 1932 games in Los Angeles, followed by gold and silver medals at the 1936 games in Berlin. The 1950s saw three Marquette alumni winning medals: a silver medal by Ken Wiesner in the high jump in Helsinki in 1952, a silver by John Bennett in the long jump in Melbourne in 1956, and a gold medal by Frank McCabe, who played on the gold-medal winning men's basketball team in Helsinki in 1952. Dwyane Wade would later follow McCabe's footsteps, winning a bronze medal as a member of the men's basketball team in Athens in 2004. Others, including Alfred "Butch" Lee, brothers Jack and Pete Walter, and Dale Lewis, have participated without medaling.
