Rev. John Wynne, S.J. [Jesuits], sent Bishop John Mark Gannon of Erie, Pennsylvania, a list of presumptive martyrs from colonial North America. While acknowledging that archival repositories in Cuba, Mexico, and Spain held the bulk of the pertinent records, Bishop Gannon assembled a team of church historians. |

Following substantial archival research, the bishops of Florida opened the cause for the martyrs of La Florida (present-day Florida and Georgia) who had been killed for their faith, 1549-1761. They comprised Apalachee, Chickasaw, and Timucua Indian converts and Dominican, Franciscan, and Jesuit missionaries, most of whom had been killed by English Carolinian forces and their Creek Indian allies. |
