History: The Diocese of Lafayette was erected for south-central Louisiana from territory of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, 1918, and it lost territory when an adjacent diocese was erected, 1980. Lafayette and its predecessors have served Immaculate Conception Church (Chitamacha), Chitamacha Reservation, Charenton, Louisiana, 1844-present (Lafayette, 1918-present).
