Mathew H. Ahmann Papers, 1958-1999

Biographical History

Mathew H. Ahmann (b. 1931, d. 2001) was a political activist known for his life-long involvement in the civil rights movement. He is most well known for his work with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., including participating in the organization of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, and his role as founder and executive director of the National Catholic Conference for Interracial Justice (NCCIJ). Following his resignation from the NCCIJ, Ahmann worked for several other civil rights and Catholic initiatives.

Scope and Content

This collection is mainly comprised of documents from Mathew Ahmann's professional life, professional correspondence, and published work. Also included are articles written about Ahmann, notes about his life as written by a relative, a compilation of published obituaries, and information about his funeral. Please note that because of the nature of the collection, when researching certain topics, one may need to cross-reference with other folders:
