Course Description

This 4 ½ hour on-line seminar presents the essential anatomic and kinesiologic principles needed to thoroughly evaluate and understand pathologies associated with the knee region. This course therefore provides the essential foundations for treatment. Dr. Neumann describes the many structural and functional musculoskeletal relationships that exist between the knee, hip, and ankle-and-ground. These relationships apply to the healthy state as well persons with lower limb pathology or injury. This material is useful for clinicians who treat a wide range of clients, from those involved with patellofemoral joint pain to generalized lower limb weakness within a geriatric population.

The seminar highlights lectures and demonstrations by Dr. Donald Neumann, which represent almost 40 years of teachings, study, practice, and writings on clinical kinesiology. Dr. Neumann has lectured and written extensively on this topic, including other topics contained in his internationally acclaimed kinesiology textbook. His lectures are enhanced by original kinesiologic illustrations and several unique teaching models and dissection videos.

Intended Audience

This course is specially designed for medical, health, or sports-related professionals who evaluate, treat, or otherwise instruct persons to improve the quality of knee and lower limb movement. This course is valuable for those professionals who work with healthy persons as well as those with pathology associated with neurologic or musculoskeletal causes.

Course Objectives

After the presentation, participants shall be able to:

• Describe the structural and functional relationships between the kinematics and major connective tissues of the knee.
• Cite the major muscles and how they drive arthrokinematics and osteokinematics of the knee.
• Cite the sources and magnitude of joint forces that occur across the knee and the patellofemoral joints.
• Explain the structure and function of the patellofemoral joints, including arthrokinematics and muscle-based arthrokinetics.
• Describe the kinesiologic synergies that exist between the muscle and joints of the hip and knee.
• Describe the pathokinesiologic mechanics behind several orthopedic problems of the knee.
• Understand the role of the knee during walking.
• Utilize kinesiological principles to guide evaluation and treatment choices for musculoskeletal conditions of the knee.

Continuing Education Credit

4.5 contact hours will be awarded by Marquette University following successful completion of an online quiz.

Faculty

Donald A. Neumann, Ph.D., P.T., FAPTA Dr. Neumann received a B.S. in physical therapy from the University of Florida. After several years of practice and teaching in rehabilitation of persons with spinal cord injury, he received a Ph.D. in Exercise Science from the University of Iowa. In 1986, he joined Marquette University where he is currently Professor Emeritus in the Department of Physical Therapy. Don has received multiple awards from the American Physical Therapy Association that have recognized his teaching, writing, and research efforts, including being named a Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the APTA in 2008. Dr. Neumann received a Teacher of the Year Award at Marquette University, and was named Wisconsin’s College Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation. In 2015, he was awarded the Educational Service Award by the World Confederation of Physical Therapy (WCPT). Dr. Neumann has received Fulbright Scholarships to teach in Lithuania, Hungary, and Japan and Ireland. He also lectured extensively throughout Asia, Europe, South America, and the United States. He is the author of Human Kinesiology: Foundations for Rehabilitation, published by Elsevier, 2017, and co-author of Kinesiology for the Physical Therapist Assistant (2019, Elsevier). Dr. Neumann also authored a chapter on the Hip, published in the 41st and 42 editions of British Gray’s Anatomy. Donald served as an Associate Editor of JOSPT from 2002-2015.
