Rivers among honorees Alumni National Awards Weekend, April 26-28

Each April, the Marquette University Alumni Association honors alumni and friends who are making a difference in their communities and beyond. This year's recipients include Alumnus of the Year Glenn "Doc" Rivers, Arts '85, along with more than 50 other alumni and friends of the university who will be honored at Alumni National Awards Weekend, April 26-28.

Dear MarquetteA wave of nostalgia for the college he will soon call his alma mater and a stumbled-upon website inspired Josh Arter, Comm '12, to start a new project — one that would allow him and others to share their college memories in a unique way. It's appropriately called Dear Marquette.

Kathleen G. CullenKathleen G. Cullen, Arts ’09, received the Milwaukee Press Club’s MVP in Religious Leadership Award, which honors individuals making the biggest impact on the City of Milwaukee. Cullen serves as the director of Campus Ministry at Divine Savior Holy Angels High School in Milwaukee. 


Francis J. PodvinFrancis J. Podvin, Law ’65, has received the Director of the Year award from the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives. Podvin is the chairman of the board for Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc., and resides in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin.

Michael J.A. LeinauerMichael J.A. Leinauer, Eng ’01, has joined the law firm of CreatiVenture Law, LLC, in St. Louis as an attorney in intellectual property. Leinauer has nearly a decade of experience in large private firm practice and adds to CreatiVenture’s extensive range of technical expertise.

Hank AaronHank Aaron to be Commencement Speaker
Baseball legend Hank Aaron will be Marquette’s Commencement speaker at this year’s spring graduation ceremony on May 20. In addition to Aaron’s famous contributions to baseball, he has worked on behalf of racial equality, civil rights and helping others through his Chasing the Dream Foundation, which helps underprivileged children.

Alumni National Board seeking nominations
The Marquette University Alumni Association National Board of Directors is seeking self-nominations for an at-large director (any part of the country except for Milwaukee and Chicago) and southwest director (Texas, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Nevada) for two-year terms. Complete your self-nomination by March 31 or contact MUAA Executive Director Tim Simmons for more information.   

Marquette names new trustees
In late February, Marquette named four new trustees to the Board of Trustees: Alfred C. McGuire (Arts '73), Dr. Janis M. Orlowski (Eng '78), James M. Weiss (Arts '68) and Thomas H. Werner (Eng '86). Meet the new Trustees

Theology professor receives national book award

Dr. Ulrich Lehner, assistant professor of theology, has been awarded the John Gilmary Shea Prize by the American Catholic Historical Association for his recent book, Enlightened Monks: The German Benedictines (1740-1803). The prize is awarded to the book that has made the most significant and unprecedented contribution to the knowledge of Catholic history, as decided by the ACHA. Learn more.

In the news: New AD Williams settles into director's chair
Larry Williams, Marquette University's new athletic director, is spending much of his time reviewing the athletics program, meeting with the university's head coaches and thinking about Marquette's place in collegiate athletics. Story appeared in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Marquette in social media championship
Today is the last day to vote for Marquette to beat UW-Madison in the championship round of Klout social media bracket. Marquette defeated UT-Austin, Michigan and Harvard to reach the final round. Vote here.
