In conjunction with the April 20 Marquette Hunger Clean-up, where 2,000 students will participate at 50 Milwaukee service sites, alumni representing several clubs including Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Raleigh, N.C., San Francisco and Seattle will also roll up their sleeves and pitch in to support their communities this spring. The Marquette University Alumni Association salutes all clubs and chapters for their many hours of community service.
Bill Cosby will be the Commencement speaker at this year’s spring ceremony, which will be held Sunday, May 19. As part of the ceremony, Cosby will receive an honorary doctor of letters degree. Griselda Aldrete, Arts '02, was named one of the 2013 Milwaukee Business Journal's 40 under 40. She is executive director of Hispanic Professionals of Greater Milwaukee and serves on the board of directors for the Cream City Foundation, where she also served as the interim executive director. She is pursuing her J.D. and M.B.A. from Marquette University.
Nancy Hernandez, Grad '02, of Milwaukee, was recently featured on NBC Latino.com sharing insights about entrepreneurship, work/life balance, mentoring and learning from others. She founded ABRAZO Multicultural Marketing & Communications, an independent Hispanic-owned and -operated company for which she serves as president.
Debbie (Matthew) Schmidt, Arts '93, and Erik Schmidt, Comm '93, met during their freshman year at Marquette. They married 15 years ago at Church of the Gesu in Milwaukee and have a family of five. They’ve had a wonderful journey, and credit Marquette University for that. The couple lives in Schaumburg, Ill.

Marquette graduate programs are ranked among nation's best
Three Marquette graduate programs made considerable gains in this year’s “Best Graduate Schools” rankings by U.S. News and World Report. The College of Business Administration’s part-time MBA program moved from 65th to 50th place, the College of Education’s graduate program moved up 14 places to its current rank of 65th, and the Law School’s part-time program is now ranked 18th.

Cristo Rey scholarship initiative is team effort for Northeast alumni
The Marquette Club of New York recently generated support
toward its Cristo Rey Network scholarship. It's designed to help deserving
students from the three Cristo Rey high schools in New York and New Jersey to
attend Marquette. “Supporting the Cristo Rey scholarship helps provide the
Marquette experience to outstanding students in the area, many of whom will be
first generation college students,” said Marquette Club of New York President

Former Hartman Literacy and Learning Center student gives back as a Marquette Engineering sophomore

Dr. Fabien Josse honored with Haggerty research award
Through his work in investigating and developing novel sensors and sensor systems, Dr. Fabien Josse, professor of electrical and computer engineering, uses his skills to help solve water contamination and bioterrorism issues. Alumni celebrate Marquette's remarkable run to Elite Eight
Marquette alumni, students and friends rang out ahoya
as the Marquette Men's Basketball team reached the Elite Eight in the
NCAA tournament for the first time since 2003. Alumni around the globe
cheered on the team at 55 official game-watching events, including
Anchorage, Boston and Texas. This March 30 television story highlighted Marquette pride nationwide.
Marquette will compete in the new 10-team BIG EAST Conference, as announced on March 20, beginning in 2013-14.
HIV/AIDS stigma in African-American community leads to research

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Marquette is hosting lectures and awareness-building efforts on campus to give voice to this important topic. This video highlights the sexual violence education and awareness initiatives Marquette University has undertaken to ensure the safety and well-being of all students. While Sexual Assault Awareness Month is recognized on campus each April, the university’s important work around sexual violence education continues year-round.

Vigil held for captured journalist James Foley, Arts '96
A campus vigil for Marquette alumnus and captured journalist James
Foley, Arts '96, was held on April 5 to appeal for his safety and
release. Foley, whose parents attended the vigil, was captured while
working as a freelance journalist in northwest Syria, reporting on the
civil war in the country. His whereabouts are currently unknown.
Foley spoke about his experience as a captive in Libya in a December 2011 visit to Marquette. Portions of his presentation, along with a letter he wrote to the Marquette community after his release in Libya, are available online. Community members can show their support by signing an online petition for his release at freejamesfoley.org.
