You're invited: Exclusive mentor gathering at Chicago's historic Tribune Tower
Steve BertrandJoin fellow mentors and mentees in Chicago at a special gathering to connect, share mentoring experiences and celebrate Marquette. The complimentary reception takes place on Thursday, January 8, from 5:30 p.m.- 7 p.m. at Tribune Tower in Chicago.

Mentor and event co-host Steve Bertrand, Jour '85, and radio news anchor at WGN Radio, looks forward to meeting you. “With many program mentors working here in Chicago, student mentees home during break and Milwaukee a short train or car ride away, this is a great chance to meet other program participants in a city where so many Marquette alumni and students call home,” he says.

Register now for this special mentor event at Chicago’s spectacular and historic Tribune Tower on Michigan Avenue.

Plan ahead and stay connected during break
On behalf of the Marquette University Alumni Association and your mentors, good luck to all mentees and students with next week’s finals. Mentors and mentees are encouraged to take advantage of the upcoming break with the following suggestions:

  • Schedule a time to connect in person or via Skype.
  • If mentees reside or are traveling to where a mentor lives, consider scheduling a one-day job shadow.
  • Mentors, are there any individuals matching your mentee’s career interest that they could meet?
  • Revisit the goals you outlined together. Are you on track? Should any goals be adjusted? If so, make note of them on your goals form.

Preparation pays big dividends for Albers, thanks to mentor Richlen
Gus Albers, Eng '17, couldn’t have been more appreciative for his mentor when he landed an internship at Brady Corp. in Milwaukee a few weeks ago. Gus’ mentor, Jeff Richlen, Grad '07, and chief engineer at Harley-Davidson Motor Co. in Milwaukee, helped prepare him for the interview at Brady.

“I’m convinced that Jeff’s guidance, including how to respond to the tough questions, put me ahead of other candidates and ultimately led to getting the internship,” Gus says. Jeff, meanwhile, couldn’t be happier. “Gus is a real bright spot and confirmation that the growing mentor program is really making a difference,” he says.

Five Questions With...Rob Hart, Comm '02
(Henry Greening, Comm '16, mentee)

Rob Hart1. Why are you serving in the MUAA Mentor Program?
It is an opportunity to pass along whatever meager advice I may have to Marquette students. 80% of success in life stems from having someone point you in the right direction.

2. What qualities do you look for and appreciate in the people you work with or hire?
Enthusiasm. Employers (and employees) want to spend their days with positive people. We enjoy what we do. So should you.

3. What suggestions do you have for mentees?
Know that you still have a lot of life ahead of you. You're not supposed to have your career path mapped out at the age of 20. Listen. Collect experiences. Be open to new ideas.
