Undergraduate Grading System

The Undergraduate grading system is as follows:
Grade Achievement Point Value
A Superior 4.0
AB   3.5
B Good 3.0
BC   2.5
C Satisfactory.  All students must earn at least a C (or 2.000) average in courses actually taken at Marquette. If a student's grade point average falls below 2.000, or if the student has accumulated excessive hours of failure, he/she will be given a scholastic censure or may be required to withdraw. 2.0
CD   1.5
D Minimum passing 1.0
F Failing 0.0
ADW Administrative withdrawal.  Assigned when a student is withdrawn from a course for administrative reasons, as determined by the university via a formal hearing and / or appeal process. 0.0
AU Audit (no credit). 0.0
CR Credit.  An option chosen by students, available in a limited number of elective credit-bearing courses.  This grade replaces the S / U grade previously used for this option. 0.0
I Assigned by the instructor, normally on a pre-arranged basis, to allow completion of course assignments other than the final examination. It is understood that the student's performance in the course must merit this special concession. If the instructor judges that the student has not merited the I grade, he or she will assign an F grade if the missing work is significant enough to deserve an F, or, alternatively, a passing grade which reflects both the quality of the work completed and the significance of the work which has not been completed. 0.0
IC Temporary grade assigned in any course not scheduled for completion by the term grading deadline. This grade does not infer any negative activity on the part of the student. 0.0
IE Temporary grade assigned to those students who are granted an extension to the deadline to remove an I, IX, or X grade. 0.0
IX Issued by the instructor to a student who is incomplete in the course work and absent from the final examination but who otherwise meets the criteria for the I grade and the X grade. (A student not qualifying will be assigned the grade of F). 0.0
NC No Credit.  An option chosen by students, available in a limited number of elective credit-bearing courses.  This grade replaces the S / U grade previously used for this option. 0.0
SNC Satisfactory / No Credit.  Mandatory grading option used for satisfactory work done in zero credit-bearing courses. 0.0
UNC Unsatisfactory / No Credit.  Mandatory grading option used for unsatisfactory work done in zero credit-bearing courses. 0.0
S Satisfactory.  The S/U grading option is used from fall 2008 and later for competency-based credit-bearing courses only.  This grade is assigned when the student earns the equivalent of a C grade or better in the class. 0.0
SY Permanent grade indicating satisfactory work completed in the first term of a series of year-long courses, and where grades are assigned only to the final course in the series 0.0
U Unsatisfactory.  The S/U grading option is used from fall 2008 and later for competency-based credit-bearing courses only.  This grade is assigned when the student earns less than the equivalent of a C grade in the class. 0.0
UW Unexcused withdrawal.  Assigned when a student is registered for the course, never attends, and fails to officially withdraw from the course. 0.0
UY A permanent grade indicating unsatisfactory work completed in the first term of a series of year-long courses, where grades are assigned only in the final course in the series. 0.0
W Official withdrawal, initiated by the student, with approval of dean or director. 0.0
WA Student was withdrawn from the course for excessive absences. (The college office decided that the student — whether passing or failing at the time — was not allowed to return to the class). 0.0
X Assigned by the instructor to a student who is absent from the final examination and who might earn a passing grade in the course were he/she to take a delayed examination. If the two conditions do not exist, the student is assigned the grade of F immediately. A student receiving the grade of X must file an explanation for his or her absence in writing to the dean of the student's college. 0.0

Former students who are applying for readmission should consult their respective deans for information concerning the application of the new grading policy to their earlier academic records.
