Research Interests

Dr. Saunders research interests include all aspects of the "mental health services delivery system," which include who needs, who obtains, the best way to deliver, and the different ways to evaluate mental health treatment. Saunders has published studies on the effect of the therapeutic alliance on treatment effectiveness in psychotherapy; on practical aspects of measuring treatment effects within real-world clinical settings; and evaluating whether involving spirituality in alcohol treatment improves effectiveness.

Current major research interests include the help-seeking process and the role of spirituality in mental health care. Studies in the former area include how persons determine that they need professional help for a psychological problem, how persons with a mental health problem (such as depression or alcoholism) get into treatment, and barriers experienced while seeking treatment, whereas studies in the latter area include the proper inclusion of spiritual and religious beliefs in the therapeutic process and graduate students’ attitudes towards including spiritual and religious content in treatment.

Undergraduate Research Assistants

Dr. Saunders has worked with numerous undergraduate in his lab. Most undergraduate students that have worked in his lab have gone on to obtain advanced (graduate) degrees in mental health care.

Graduate Students

Graduate students who have completed their doctorates with Dr. Saunders are shown on the following page. They have conducted research into the effectiveness of treatment for borderline personality disorder (Sara Little, Ph.D. and Melissa Miller, Ph.D.), the effectiveness of suicide assessment in emergency departments (Megan Petrik, Ph.D.), factors influencing the therapeutic alliance (Karen Zygowicz, Ph.D. and Cody Carson, Ph.D.), barriers to treatment seeking for mental health problems among lawyers (Joan Ravenelli-Miller, Ph.D.) and military personnel (Laura Bein, Ph.D.), the stigma associated with mental illness among mental health professionals (Lynn Servais, Ph.D.), ethnicity-related issues that affect treatment-seeking and treatment effectiveness (Carolina Mendez, Ph.D. and Angelique West-Lewis, Ph.D.), and the effects of "wraparound" treatment programs (Erik Seybold, Ph.D.).
